Iconic Melbourne music venue 'The Gaso' to close

Collingwood’s iconic Melbourne music venue, The Gasometer Hotel (The Gaso), is set to close its doors at the end of March.

Known by punters in Melbourne as The Gaso, the venue has become one of cornerstones of Melbourne's nightlife and music scene. With its history dating back to the 1860s, it has become home to a range of live performances across diverse genres.

One of its unique features is the opening roof above the two story main band room, a unique gig going experience amongst The Gaso's eclectic spaces, catering to a wide range of events.

A statement posted to the hotel’s Instagram said, “It is with a heavy heart that we share our final update in regards to the future of the Gasometer Hotel.”

“We were surprised and humbled with the amount of enquiries we received about taking over operations.”

“Despite our best efforts and some solid offers put forward the building owners rejected the offers, choosing to go in their own direction.”

Back in February, it was announced that their current director would be moving onto other projects.

This left the venue in search of someone to take over the operations and keep the venue's legacy alive.

But these hopes were short lived.

The hotel’s statement continued to read, “As of the 30th of March, the venue that you've come to know, love, hang out at or danced all night in, will cease to exist.”

“This is not the outcome we had hoped for, and we're left disappointed that we are unable to pass the torch on.”

“We're treating this as the end,” said the venue.

Amy Wooller, Content Creator and Radio Presenter at SYN Media, said her heart sank for the venue, with The Gaso being a Melbourne institution and one of those places she thought would be around forever.

“It was not good news to hear, but unfortunately part of me was not surprised,” she said.

“Broadly speaking, Australia’s music industry has been struggling for a hot minute and this has impacted how many venues are able to sustain themselves.”

“So many emerging and big artists in Australia have done shows there too… everyone knows and loves The Gaso because of this!” said Wooller.

Final gigs will continue through to the end of this month, with a closing weekend program to be announced.

With the news of the venue's imminent closure, patrons are encouraged to look back on the legacy of The Gasometer Hotel whilst drinking the bar dry over its final days.

“It's been a true honour to have played a part in this iconic space, and in this incredible scene,” the hotel said.
